Living My Best Royal Life: The Marwari Takeover at Taj Falaknuma Palace

If you are going to celebrate International Palace Day, you might as well pull up in a horse-drawn carriage looking like you're ready to reclaim your ancestral lands.

Thursday night took me up the hill to Taj Falaknuma Palace for their Echoes of Marwar festival. The Hyderabad weather actually behaved β€” a pleasant breeze made walking the grounds of the 133-year-old palace feel straight out of a classic movie set. Dinner was laid out in the Coronation Hall, with a live Santoor and Tabla duo playing in the background β€” the kind of detail that makes a meal feel like an occasion before the first course even arrives. Add a core group of great friends to the mix, the kind who won't judge you for taking photos of your food from three different angles, and the night was already a win.

When Jodhpur Meets Hyderabad

This wasn't just another dinner; it was a literal culinary diplomatic mission. Chef Chander Singh traveled all the way from the legendary kitchens of Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur, to bring an authentic Marwari thali to Hyderabad.

The Royal Breakdown

We bypassed a standard menu for a continuous flow of heritage recipes that hit every flavor note perfectly, opening with a Mirchi Bhaji amuse-bouche before the thali properly began:

The vegetarian thali was the main event, but there's also an Γ  la carte non-vegetarian selection for anyone who wants to go beyond it β€” a fiery Laal Maas made with Mathania chillies, and a classic Murgh Jodhpuri, among the standouts.

By the time the Mewari Mishthan (dessert) course arrived, I had to remind myself that royalty requires stamina. But you don't say no to Malai Ghewar, Dal Badam Ka Halwa, Mewa Rasani, and Lapsi. You just accept your fate, enjoy the sweet finish, and plan on hitting the gym sometime next month.

A massive shoutout to the team at Taj Falaknuma Palace for hosting an evening where heritage, incredible music, and unmatched hospitality came together so effortlessly. If you want to experience the absolute best of Rajasthan's royal heritage without buying a plane ticket, this pop-up is a must-visit.

Filed under Binger Diaries β€” because you don't critique a meal prepared by royal decree, you just ask for a second helping of Ghewar.
