Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai Review: A Legendary Art Deco Stay on the Bund

Disclosure: Our 4-night room stay at the Fairmont Peace Hotel was fully paid for by us. However, we had the pleasure of participating in two exclusive collaborations hosted by the hotel—an evening at the legendary Jazz Bar and a special lunch at Dragon Phoenix Restaurant. As always, all opinions, reviews, and insights are genuinely my own.

Shanghai is a city where hyper-modern skyscrapers seamlessly rise beside historic colonial architecture, but nowhere is this contrast more beautifully represented than at the legendary Fairmont Peace Hotel. Nestled directly on the Bund, this landmark hotel is a living monument to Shanghai's glamorous 1930s era. For our recent trip to China, my family and I decided to spend four nights experiencing the history, luxury, and warm hospitality of this iconic property.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely. If it's your first trip to Shanghai and the budget allows, the Fairmont Peace Hotel isn't just a hotel — it's part of the Shanghai experience. Between the location on the Bund, the 1930s Art Deco grandeur, the legendary Jazz Bar, and those views of Pudong at night, this is one of those rare stays that genuinely becomes a highlight of the trip.

First Impressions: A Street Wrapped in Wedding Dreams

Our arrival at the Fairmont Peace Hotel was nothing short of cinematic. As our taxi pulled onto Nanjing Road East right where it meets the Bund, the very first thing we noticed was that the entire street was packed with couples doing professional wedding photography. Everywhere we looked, brides in stunning white gowns and grooms in tuxedos were posing against the historic, European-style facades.

Intrigued, we asked the bellboy helping us with our bags about the spectacle. He smiled warmly and explained, "This is the heart of the old British Concession area. The architecture here is so uniquely classic and European that people feel as if they are in Paris or London. It's the most popular spot in Shanghai for capturing wedding memories." It was the perfect introduction to the hotel's legendary charm—a place so beautiful that people travel from all over China just to photograph its surroundings.

The Stay: Pure Art Deco Luxury & Comfort

We stayed at the property from May 8 to May 12 (4 nights). Traveling as a group of 3 adults, the retail cash rate for this stay falls firmly in the $$$ territory—it's a genuine splurge. But we booked as paying guests and unlocked incredible value through our elite membership benefits and smart booking strategies, which made the math feel a lot more comfortable.

The rooms at the Fairmont Peace Hotel are a gorgeous tribute to the 1930s Golden Age, blending historic Art Deco elegance with modern conveniences. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, the marble bathrooms were stocked with premium amenities, and the daily turn-down service kept our space pristine. But what made the room experience truly spectacular were the perks we unlocked during booking.

⚠️ A Minor Caveat: Entrance Security

One small letdown during our stay was the security questioning at the hotel entrances. The hotel has multiple entrances, and if you happen to use the one facing Nanjing Road East, the staff is always positioned there to stop and ask if you are a guest staying at the hotel. While we understand they likely enforce this to prevent tourists from crowding the lobby just to take photos inside, being questioned every single time you enter your own hotel was a bit of a letdown for a luxury property.

Elite Status Perks: The Power of Accor Platinum

We booked our stay as Accor Platinum members, and the privileges were honored beautifully. In the Asia-Pacific region, Accor Platinum (and Diamond) status guarantees complimentary daily breakfast for all registered guests in the room.

Every morning, we enjoyed a luxurious breakfast buffet at the hotel's signature restaurant, The Cathay Room, overlooking the historic Bund waterfront. With three adults, having a premium five-star breakfast fully covered for four consecutive days saved us a significant amount of money and added an extra layer of ease and indulgence to our mornings.

The Iconic Jazz Bar (#hosted)

No visit to the Fairmont Peace Hotel—or indeed Shanghai—is complete without spending an evening at the legendary Jazz Bar. Stepping inside feels like walking through a portal directly into a 1930s speakeasy. The dark wood paneling, low amber lighting, and vintage leather chairs create an atmosphere thick with history.

We were hosted by the hotel to experience their world-renowned Old Jazz Band. The band is famous globally, consisting of legendary musicians (some now in their 80s and 90s) who have played for international presidents, royalty, and movie stars over the decades. Watching them perform classic, smooth jazz tunes with such passion and joy was an emotional and unforgettable experience. The music fills the room, carrying the spirit of Old Shanghai.

Dragon Phoenix Restaurant: The Ultimate Cultural & Culinary Highlight (#hosted)

Another incredible experience hosted by the hotel was a lunch at their premier Chinese restaurant, Dragon Phoenix. Decorated in magnificent traditional Chinese style with carved pillars, dragon motifs, and views looking out over the Bund and the Pudong skyline, it is the epitome of grand dining.

What truly blew us away, however, was the service. As a family, we do not eat pork, which is a staple ingredient in authentic Shanghainese and Chinese cooking. When the hotel team learned about our dietary preference, they went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. They customized a completely pork-free menu for us, showcasing exquisite chicken and vegetarian dishes prepared with incredible skill.

🍲 A Lunch of Exquisite Hospitality

We were joined for lunch by the hotel's Director and Fancy Zhu (Marketing & Communications Assistant Manager). They were incredibly sweet, generous, and warm. They sat with us, giving us a couple of hours of their valuable time. Over delicious food, we engaged in a beautiful exchange of cultural nuances, comparing life in India and China, and diving deep into the hotel's rich history. They shared stories of the hotel's founder, Victor Sassoon, and the famous celebrities who walked these very corridors. We walked away not just with full bellies, but with new friendships and a profound appreciation for Chinese hospitality.

Location: The Perfect Shanghai Base

If you're planning a trip to Shanghai, the location of the Fairmont Peace Hotel is absolutely unbeatable. It sits right at the intersection of Nanjing Road East (the premier pedestrian shopping street) and the Bund (the historic waterfront). And honestly, we got to experience this neighbourhood in the most wonderful way — through the Shanghai Greeter program. If you haven't read that post yet, do — it completely changed how we explored the city, and so much of what we discovered on foot was within walking distance of this very hotel.

The Rooftop Bar: Unobstructed Bund & Pearl Tower Views

Even if you aren't staying at the hotel, stopping by the rooftop bar for an evening drink is an absolute must-do in Shanghai. The bar offers one of the most breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Shanghai skyline.

Sitting out on the terrace with a cocktail in hand, looking directly at the glittering Huangpu River, the historic buildings of the Bund, and the towering Oriental Pearl Tower across the river in Pudong is a core Shanghai memory. The atmosphere is sophisticated and lively, making it the perfect spot to capture photos or simply soak in the city's energy as the lights come alive at night.

Final Verdict: Would We Recommend It?

Absolutely, 100%. The Fairmont Peace Hotel is not just a place to sleep; it is an experience in itself. From the moment we landed in our taxi to the day we checked out, we felt immensely welcomed. The staff's willingness to accommodate our dietary needs at Dragon Phoenix and the historical charm of the Jazz Bar made this one of our favorite hotel stays in Asia.

Whether you're a history buff, a luxury traveler, or a content creator seeking the most photogenic backdrops in Shanghai, the Fairmont Peace Hotel delivers on every count. Binging on life in Shanghai starts right here!

And here's a little insider scoop the Director shared with us over lunch — by 2027, this property is set to be rebranded as a Raffles. Honestly? We weren't surprised one bit. From the moment we walked in, the grandeur of this place always felt like it belonged in a league above Fairmont. A Raffles address on the Bund is going to be something else entirely.

💡 Insider Tips for International Travelers

Points & Booking Hacks: How to Get the Most Value Here

The Fairmont Peace Hotel is a fantastic property to maximise if you’re into credit card points. On the points side, HSBC Credit Card members can transfer points to Accor Live Limitless (ALL) at a fixed, transparent rate — 2,000 ALL points = €40 (approx. ₹4,400). What makes this especially useful is that you can use your ALL balance at the counter to offset room charges, taxes, or even your dining bill at Dragon Phoenix. No blackouts, no dynamic pricing games — just a clean, predictable redemption that works particularly well at high-value properties like this one.

On the cash side, don’t just book directly. The Fairmont Peace Hotel supports advisor-exclusive rates through channels like HERA (Accor’s preferred partner program) or FORA. We’re talking perks like "Book 3 Nights, Get the 4th Free" (a genuine 25% off), a $100 USD hotel credit to use at the Jazz Bar or restaurant, room upgrades where available, and flexible check-in/out. If you’re paying cash either way, booking through one of these advisors is a no-brainer — same rate, far more value.
